WICSA 2005 Talk:Decisions Considered

It is interresting to see that the author sees design decisions and views as incompatible. In my opinion, design decisions do not replace all architectural views, but are more underlying them. Viewpoints give a guideline/direction to an architect for some of his decision making. Furthermore, they also address the point of haviing a common terminology and abstractions. In this sense, they are very worthfull, as it promotes the understanding of some of the decisions the architect makes.

The ontologies (or domain models) supporting the rationale of the intent of the design decisions is partly covered in the description of viewpoints. However, the extension mechanism of the standard is not sufficient to incorporate the whole of these ontologies and domain models.

Saying that design decisions could be viewed as just another view is an option, but it is an artificial created illusion from what is really happening.
