Jaap van der Heijden is heading the Philips research group on Software Architectures. This group works on Connected Consumer Systems (interoperability, standardization, services models, platform for Ambient Intelligence) and on Health Care Systems Software (System performance, new platforms, component interfacing, product family architectures).

Mr. Van der Heijden joined Philips in 1974 and spent the early part of his career as a Systems Architect in Philips Research Laboratories where he defined in-home communication over ISDN, systems design for glass fiber to the home and the predecessor of the GSM. After 13 years in research, he worked for 7 years as development manager in Philips Data Systems and Digital Equipment Corporation, for data communication sub systems and for server development. Later as product maanger and engineering manager for software and systems development. Back to Philips, Jaap joint CE to become responsible for setting up the HAVi consortium for in-home interoperability and the discussions with Sun on Java-light. Since 7 years he is back in Philips Research, now as department head in software intensive systems.

Mr. Van der Heijden holds a masters degree in Electronics/Computer Science from the University of Delft, (with honors).
