Subject: Real time systems

Contents

Short Paper Presentations

Real-Time Collaboration in Activity Based Architectures

Authors: Jakob Bardram, Henrik B Christensen (University of Aarhus)

Presented by Henrik Christensen

Main ideas:

  • Human activity as first class citizen. Examples:
    • Writing a paper
    • Diagnosing a patient
  • Real-time aspect: Achieving adequate performance for practical use

A Network Architectural Style for Real-time Systems: NaSr

Authors: Rabih Bashroush, Ivor Spence, Peter Kilpatrick, John Brown (Queens University of Belfast)

Presented by Rabih Bashroush

Main ideas:

  • Fit everything into a single service-oriented framework with packet-switched inter-component communication
  • Encapsulate COTS by wrappers
  • Real-time aspect supported e.g. by timestamps in messages

Discussion

  • Main aspect of real-time systems: predictable timing (not necessarily miraculous performance).
  • Unfortunately, in most cases this is done by doing experiments instead of building systems predictably from the bottom up.
  • Can we maintain these timing guarantees if we increase dynamism in system evolution?
  • More generally, can we predict and maintain essential qualities, such as safety, while our systems are changing?
  • It seems that users have become more tolerant of system faults, provided they can get the newest and the greatest systems.
  • Are architects giving priority to the right quality attributes? Are they too conservative in worrying about safety?
