WICSA 2005:Setting Up Change Notifications

The MediaWiki software supports a feature to send you email notifications on changes to particular pages. Here's how it works.
Some prior conditions:
- Each user account has an associated email address. The Wiki software will need to confirm the validity of that email address.
- Each user can designate a page to be on his/her "watch" list.
- Each user can optionally turn on change notification, and these are the options:
- Send me an email on page changes -- at least this choice needs to be selected
- Send me an email when my user talk page is changed
- Send me an email also for minor edits of pages
Once the above items have been configured, then each time a change D occurs to a watched page P of a user U, and U has not visited P for some period of time, then the Wiki system sends U a notification email of the change occurrence of P. The notice provides a link to a "diff" page that shows the delta between the current version and D.
To configure your account for the email notification, please follow these steps:
- Make sure your email address is valid by going to the "User Data" page of your preferences page
- Under the "Email" box, if you haven't confirmed your email address, click on the "Confirm email address" link
- This causes a confirmation message to be sent to your email address
- Click on the confirmation link in that message to complete the email validation process
- Go back to the preferences page, and check the email notification option(s) you want
- Visit the pages you care about on the Wiki site and mark them as "watch" pages
- You should now start to receive email notifications when change occurs to any of the watched pages
