WICSA 2005:Page Contribution Walk-thru
From WICSA Conference Wiki
This walk-thru gives you an exemplar to quickly contribute a page to Wiki.
- Think about what you want to contribute.
- Does it fit within an existing page? If so, go edit that page and add your content to it.
- Is it new content that doesn't fit in any existing page? If so, you'll need to create a new page, so please continue reading...
- Find an appropriate page P from which to link to your to-be-created page X.
- A good heuristic to determine P is to consider the context in which your content makes sense, perhaps the idea came during a working session discussion, in which case you may consider linking from that session's discussion page.
- If no P fits, you may consider the front page of WICSA 5, as was the case with Elliot Chikofsky's WCRE General Chair's message. (Please note, though, that admins may choose to re-locate your page link.)
- Consider what you would like to name your page X.
- Edit page P and add this name as a link. Save page.
- On page P, click on the new link for page X to get the edit page. Add your content.
- Save page. VoilĂ ! you've created page X.
Here's a concrete example, using Elliot's page, WICSA 2005:Reverse Engineering and Software Architecture...
- Elliot wanted to add a page on this subject and provide a link to the PDF version of his message.
- This didn't really fit well in any existing page.
- Elliot considered it new content.
- His content targets a topic that spans both of the two joint conferences, so it fit no where else except the WICSA 5 main page.
- Name of page X: WICSA 2005:Reverse Engineering and Software Architecture
- Elliot edited the "What's New" section of the WICSA 5 main page, adding a bullet, as below.
- Notice the page label as distinguished from the page name. You may choose to do that.
- After saving the added link, from the WICSA 5 main page again, Elliot clicked on his new page link and started adding his content.
- First, he uploaded his PDF file, which he would be using in his page:
- Click the "Upload file" link in the toolbox on the left of the page.
- Browse for the source file and copy-and-paste the auto-generated "Destination filename" (in this example, "WCRE 2005 Gen Chair message.pdf").
- Optionally add a summary, then click "Upload file".
- Going back to the page he's creating, he added the text content, and included a link to his uploaded media, as below.
- First, he uploaded his PDF file, which he would be using in his page:
- Elliot previews his page and finally saves it.
Bullet added to page P:
* [[WICSA 2005:Reverse Engineering and Software Architecture| Discussion of the relationship between software architecture and reverse engineering.]]
